Primitive Arrows

Our primitive arrows are made to replicate the style of Native American design.  We can make arrows from complete native shafting with fletching of natural Turkey or Goose wrapped with true sinew.  Most of the arrows are done with Trueflight natural colors that are glued on to improve durability.  The arrows are wrapped with artificial sinew for the native look and to protect the fletch and self nock.  Shafts are made from Port Orford Cedar, Poplar or Bamboo.  Arrows come standard with fileldpoints, but we have a number of metal trade point styles and can even haft a stone point knapped by local experts in Montana.

Primitive Archery

We make bows and arrows that are primarily used in the Mountain Man Rondys or the Historical Reinactments of Pre 1850.

Bows are available in 66, 68 and 72 inch which are capable of full draw for most American shooters.  we also offer shorter bows which can be used for instinctive style shooting and shorter draw lengths.  The primary wood used is Hickory which provides a good stable bow wood for an affordable price.  We also make bows of Osage Orange and Pacific Yew,  for the best bow woods wanted by experienced archers.

Bow are generally made with no cut in arrow shelf and a string made of artificial sinew for safety and a long string life.  Bows generally have a stitched Buckskin grip for less slippage and a comfortable feel.

Primitive arrows are made from Port Orford Cedar, Poplar and Bamboo.  We offer any color that Trueflight makes, plus natural Turkey and Goose.  Most folk prefer the more subdued and natural looking fletchings on their Primitime arrows for a more historic look.

Primitive Bows

Primitives bows are primarily made on a Hickory stave to allow a quality bow of a reasonable price.  We have a number of backing and laminate options for the hickory bows to give additional speed and strength.  We also offer custom bows of Osage Orange which makes the best the  of primitive self bows.  The bows are generally of flatbow design, but longer than the prairie bow design for a longer and smoother draw to the general needs of the modern archer.  Bows are normally made in 60″, 66″, 68″ and 72″ – but can be made in just about any reasonable length.

The competative requirements of most primitive archery events allow only bows of all wood, and usually backing of only natural North American materials.  Bows cannot have arrow shelves either cut in or added on the outside.  Strings cannot have servings or nock points.  We make our primitive bowstrings from artificial sinew with a ‘flemish braid’ upper loop and the lower end is tied to the bow with a boyer’s knot or timber hitch. These strings are of Dacron, so are as strong as B-50, yet meet all primitive requirements unless the competition requires completely natural string material.  We have complained of this requirement to a number of primitive event holders for safety reasons.  Artificial sinew is much less prone to stretching or breaking as materials such as linen or true sinew.  We do offer strings of linen if you request it.
